How to write a resume headline (with examples)
A resume headline is one line that tells a recruiter who you are professionally. Job portals such as Naukri ask for one, recruiters see it in search results, and it works at the top of a resume too.
A one-line formula
Role + experience level + two or three key skills + domain or strength. Keep it short enough to read in search results, and use terms recruiters search for.
- Fresher (fictional): “B.Tech CSE 2025 graduate | Java, Spring Boot, SQL | Backend developer”
- Experienced (fictional): “Senior Accountant, 6 years | GST, TDS, Tally | Manufacturing”
- Experienced (fictional): “Digital Marketing Executive, 3 years | SEO, Google Ads, Analytics”
Headline, summary and profile: keep them consistent
Your portal headline, LinkedIn headline and resume summary should tell the same story. If your headline says backend developer and your resume opens with digital marketing, a recruiter has to guess which is true.
Update the headline when you change target roles, and use the role names that appear in the jobs you want.
